Imphal, 12th May (IANS) Two individuals associated with the radical Meitei group ‘Arambai Tenggol’ have been apprehended by Manipur Police for the kidnapping and assault of four police officers at the Kangpokpi Police station, situated in a tribal-dominated area, officials confirmed on Sunday.

The incident took place on Saturday night when the four policemen were abducted along National Highway-2 at Koirengei in Imphal East district while travelling from Imphal to Kangpokpi.

A police official in Imphal revealed that the arrested individuals, Taibanganba Sanoujam, aged 25, and Moirangthem Bobo, aged 40, are currently in custody. Search operations are ongoing to locate the abducted officers and apprehend other suspects involved in the crime.

The kidnapped police officers have been identified as Ram Bahadur Karki, Ramesh Budhathoki, Manoj Khatiwoda, and Md Taj Khan.

In response to the incident, the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), a prominent tribal organization, enforced a 24-hour total shutdown across Kangpokpi district to demonstrate their discontent over the abduction and brutal assault of the police officers. The shutdown continued until midnight on Sunday.

CoTU Media Cell Coordinator Ng Lun Kipgen reported that the Kangpokpi Police personnel were subjected to severe physical violence at Koirengei.

Earlier on May 9, Manipur Police, with the assistance of local residents, successfully rescued CRPF Assistant Sub-Inspector Lensat Sitlhou after he was abducted by armed individuals in Imphal West district. The ASI had also reportedly suffered physical harm at the hands of his captors.
