The unfortunate incident took place at around 11:00 am, as recounted by the victim’s devastated family. Shahadat Hossain Salim, a relative of the patient, shared the harrowing experience they endured. “The lift suddenly came to a halt as we were descending from the 11th floor to the fourth. We were trapped inside for a grueling 45 minutes until help arrived, but tragically, our patient succumbed before we could escape,” he expressed with profound sorrow.

Alauddin, a hospital worker who was also inside the lift at the time, revealed that there were 18 to 20 individuals trapped alongside Mumtaz. Her son, Abdul Mannan, was among those stuck inside with her, making the situation all the more distressing.

Allegations and Negligence

Abdul Mannan recounted the harrowing moments inside the malfunctioning lift, stating, “Despite multiple attempts to reach out for help using the emergency contact numbers within the lift, no assistance was forthcoming. We were left stranded for 45 agonizing minutes, and my mother tragically perished due to suffocation.”

Kamal Hossain, another individual trapped in the lift, made disturbing allegations of misconduct by those they sought help from. Instead of lending a helping hand, some individuals reportedly behaved inappropriately, exacerbating the distress of the trapped individuals.

Lack of Oversight and Accountability

Biplab, an Ansar member stationed at the hospital’s gate, shed light on the operational challenges faced by the hospital’s lifts. He highlighted the potential risks of exceeding the lift’s weight capacity and the absence of designated staff to handle emergencies, painting a concerning picture of negligence.

Abdur Rahim, a patient’s attendant who witnessed the ordeal from a different floor, expressed dismay at the lack of immediate assistance provided to the trapped individuals. The cries for help went unanswered, underscoring a critical lapse in the hospital’s emergency response protocols.

Investigation and Accountability

In response to the tragic incident, the hospital authorities have initiated a thorough investigation. A five-member probe committee, led by Professor Rubina Yasmin of the medicine department, has been tasked with uncovering the circumstances that led to Mumtaz Begum’s tragic demise.

Resident Medical Officer Hasneen Jahan assured that the incident is under intense scrutiny, with details of the investigation set to be disclosed upon its completion. Deputy Director Md Jahangir Alam mandated a prompt submission of the probe committee’s report within three working days, emphasizing the urgency of accountability.
