A Pingree Grove man was charged after police discovered the remains of a missing Crystal Lake man in Kane County. Crystal Lake Police received a report on April 4 that James Cromwell, 57, was missing. The investigation suggested criminal involvement in Cromwell’s disappearance, leading to search warrants being issued for locations in Kane County. Human remains identified as Cromwell were found on a property in Route 72, where he had died from a gunshot wound. Douglas Ottesen, 60, was charged with multiple crimes including first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping. Ottesen was arrested and held at Kane County Jail pending his case.

Man Charged After Human Remains Found in Kane County
HAMPSHIRE TOWNSHIP, Ill. – A Pingree Grove man is facing charges after police discovered the remains of a missing Crystal Lake man in Kane County.
The investigation began when Crystal Lake Police received a report on April 4 that James Cromwell, 57, of Crystal Lake, was missing. Early findings suggested that Cromwell’s disappearance may have involved criminal activity.
To further the investigation, the Crystal Lake Police Department obtained search warrants for two locations in Kane County. One of the warrants was executed at a property in the 45W200 block of Illinois Route 72. Simultaneously, a second warrant was served at the home of Douglas Ottesen, 60, of Pingree Grove.
During the search at the property on Route 72, human remains were discovered and later identified as those of James Cromwell. An autopsy conducted by the Kane County Coroner’s Office revealed that Cromwell had died from a gunshot wound.

Douglas Ottesen was subsequently charged with several crimes, including First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Kidnapping, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition by a Felon, Aggravated Unlawful Restraint, and Concealment of Homicidal Death.
Ottesen was taken into custody and is currently being held at the Kane County Jail pending further legal proceedings.
