While it has become somewhat common to witness Tesla drivers misusing their vehicle’s driver assistance systems, drivers of other brands have generally displayed better behavior. However, a recent video involving a Ford driver suggests that the issue of overdependence on automated driving systems could extend beyond just one automaker.
Shared on Instagram by user @__c.crawford__, the video shows a man stretched out across the back seat of a truck identified as a Ford F-450. The camera then pans to reveal an empty driver’s seat, with the caption “F450 driving itself” displayed on the screen.

According to the speedometer in the video, the truck is traveling at speeds exceeding 80 mph (129 km/h), as reported by The Drive. To deceive the lane-centering system into believing that a driver’s hand is on the wheel, two bags are placed on the left spoke of the steering wheel. The person filming from the passenger seat remarks, “This is probably the most nerve-racking thing I’ve ever done.”
And rightly so, as this reckless act poses a significant danger by risking the lives of both occupants in the Ford truck, as well as other individuals on the road. No vehicle on the road is capable of safely executing such a stunt, especially not the F-450.
Although Ford offers a Level 2 driver assistance system known as BlueCruise – which requires an attentive driver to be present at all times – this service is not available on the F-450.
Therefore, this dangerous act is likely being carried out using adaptive cruise control and lane centering assistance technology. While these systems help keep a vehicle within its lane, they are not intended to fully take over the responsibility of driving.
Ironically, these low-tech driver assistance technologies are probably the reason why the truck is easily tricked. Vehicles equipped with BlueCruise are designed to slow down and come to a stop if the system detects that the driver is not paying adequate attention to the road.
