The Tragic Incident in Long Beach
In a devastating turn of events, a 17-year-old boy riding a scooter was struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver in the city of Long Beach. The incident occurred at the intersection of Orange Avenue and South Street, a bustling area in the heart of the city.
The Scene of the Crash
According to the Long Beach Police Department, the young boy was hit by a 2012 Cadillac as he was riding his scooter northbound on Orange Avenue. The impact of the collision was so severe that the SUV veered off the road and crashed into an apartment building at 6100 Orange Ave.
Emergency services were quick to respond, and paramedics rushed the boy to a nearby hospital. Tragically, despite their best efforts, the boy succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
The Suspect and Arrest
The driver of the Cadillac, later identified as 35-year-old Karen Mativa from Compton, allegedly fled the scene on foot immediately after the incident. However, she returned shortly after and was apprehended by the authorities. Mativa was taken into custody and booked on multiple charges, including driving under the influence, hit and run resulting in death or injury, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and assault with a deadly weapon with force. Her bail was set at $130,000.
