These criminals are changing the odometer readings on used cars and trucks in order to deceive buyers.

The scammers are tampering with the title of the vehicles by altering the odometer readings. 1. They may offer a seemingly lucrative deal that is too good to be true. For example, presenting a 2014 car with 100,000 miles at a price significantly lower than its actual value.
  2. The vehicle will appear excessively clean, both in the interior and under the hood.
  3. The seller’s name may not be on the title, claiming to be selling the car for a relative.
  4. They will insist on a cash-only transaction.
  5. They will suggest meeting at a neutral location, such as a department store parking lot, and may avoid revealing their identity by not bringing a second vehicle to the meeting.
  6. They may present fake IDs to further deceive buyers.

Identifying the Scammers

The individuals behind these scams have been described as two dark-skinned males, possibly Hispanic, in their early thirties. One suspect is around 5’6″ and weighs approximately 140 lbs, while the other is around 5’8″ and 180 lbs. The taller suspect is the one who typically engages in conversation during the transaction.

Protecting Yourself

To safeguard yourself from falling victim to odometer scammers, it is recommended to run a CarFAX report on the vehicle using the license plate or VIN number to verify the actual mileage. These scammers may present fake CarFAX reports to deceive buyers.
