Houston police have charged 36-year-old Christopher Michael Rodriguez with aggravated assault of a public servant, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and felon in possession of a firearm following a police shooting incident. Officer Eakins responded to gunshots at 600 East Tidwell Road and encountered Rodriguez armed with a pistol. Despite commands to drop the weapon, Rodriguez continued to run with the pistol, prompting Eakins to shoot him multiple times. Rodriguez sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital. Rodriguez admitted to firing his pistol in the air prior to the incident. HPD reports Eakins, sworn in as an officer in November 2020, was involved in the shooting.

Man Charged in Houston Police Shooting Incident

HOUSTON – Houston police have formally charged a 36-year-old man involved in a police shooting incident that took place on Thursday night. Christopher Michael Rodriguez now faces charges of aggravated assault of a public servant, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

On Thursday evening around 8:20 p.m., HPD Officer Eakins responded to a call at 600 East Tidwell Road after reportedly hearing gunshots in the area. Upon arrival, Officer Eakins encountered Rodriguez, who was seen running in front of a store armed with a pistol.

The officer immediately instructed Rodriguez to drop the firearm, but instead of complying, Rodriguez continued to flee in the opposite direction while still holding the weapon, according to officials.

Officer Eakins, feeling threatened for his safety, once again demanded that Rodriguez drop his weapon. As Rodriguez turned with the gun in his hand, Officer Eakins fired several shots, striking Rodriguez.

Rodriguez, sustaining non-life-threatening injuries, was promptly transported to the hospital for treatment. Officer Eakins, who joined the force in November 2020 and was assigned to the North Patrol Division, is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

Further details emerged from the initial inquiry, revealing that Rodriguez had fired the initial gunshots during a confrontation with another individual. Rodriguez acknowledged discharging his pistol into the air just prior to the arrival of law enforcement. Consequently, he has been charged in connection with the altercation.
