A tragic single vehicle crash in North Kona on Tuesday resulted in the death of a 78-year-old male passenger from Papaikou, and left the female driver hospitalized. The incident occurred on Mamalahoa Highway (Highway 190) near the 31.5-mile marker, a stretch of road located in the beautiful North Kona region of Hawaii.

The Hawaiʻi Police Department identified the male victim as Jeffrey Lawrence Gross, a resident of Papaikou. The details of the incident were provided in a news release by the police department, shedding light on the events that led to the tragic outcome.
Details of the Crash
According to police reports, the silver 2014 Kia Sorento, with the 78-year-old male passenger and a 48-year-old female driver from Papaikou inside, was traveling south on Mamalahoa Highway when it crossed over the solid white fog line on the makai side of the road. The vehicle then veered off the right shoulder, went down an embankment, and overturned.

The 78-year-old male passenger was rushed to Kona Community Hospital for treatment but tragically succumbed to his injuries. He was pronounced dead at 2:07 p.m. The female driver, also from Papaikou, was also taken to Kona Community Hospital for medical attention and remains hospitalized at this time.
