CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR: The Parbhani district police have registered a case of murder, destruction of evidence, and intentional omission to give information of an offense after a 20-year-old woman was strangled by her family members, allegedly for fleeing with a youth belonging to the OBC community.

The deceased, identified as Sakshi Babar, was the daughter of Balasaheb Babar, a 47-year-old farmer from Navha village, who has since been arrested in connection with the crime. The Palam police, acting on a complaint filed by inspector Raosaheb Gadewad, filed an FIR against eight individuals, including Babar and his close relatives, late on Friday. Babar was produced in court on Saturday and subsequently remanded in 2-day police custody.

According to the Palam police, the victim was a member of the Maratha community, and they have classified the incident as an honor killing. Purna sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Samadhan Patil stated, “The 20-year-old woman fled with the youth on April 15. Her family, out of concern for social stigma, did not report the incident and instead pressured the youth’s family to return their daughter.”

Upon the woman’s return on April 21, her parents attempted to persuade her to end her relationship with the youth. An argument ensued, leading to the woman being strangled by her father, as revealed by SDPO Patil. Subsequently, with the assistance of eight close relatives, the family discreetly conducted the woman’s last rites.

The police were informed of the incident three days ago by an informant, prompting an investigation that culminated in the arrest of the victim’s father. During questioning, Babar confessed to the murder of his daughter.

The tragic incident has sparked outrage in the local community, with many calling for justice for Sakshi Babar. Advocacy groups have condemned the practice of honor killings and urged for stricter laws to prevent such atrocities from occurring in the future.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the deep-rooted societal issues that continue to plague communities across India. It highlights the importance of addressing issues of caste, gender, and family honor to create a more just and equitable society for all individuals.

As the investigation into Sakshi Babar’s murder continues, the Parbhani district police have assured the public that they will leave no stone unturned in bringing the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice.
