TOOELE — In a surprising turn of events in Tooele, police officers found themselves in a potentially dangerous struggle with a fugitive from out-of-state. The incident took place during a search for a wanted fugitive inside a home on East Bench, where they had no idea the fugitive was hiding.

Body camera footage obtained by KSL TV captured the encounter, revealing that the man they encountered tried to grab their guns twice, putting the officers at risk.
Search for the Fugitive
On April 23, police were on the lookout for 37-year-old fugitive Amber Pyne, who had an active warrant for her arrest. They arrived at a home on Haylie Lane, where Pyne had entered along with another individual.
As officers searched for Pyne inside the house, they came across a man, later identified as 33-year-old Gordon Wesley Cronk, exiting a basement door. Cronk claimed he did not see Pyne while he was in the basement.
Intense Struggle
According to court documents, officers found Pyne hidden under boxes and household items stacked on top of her. When they attempted to arrest Cronk for obstruction, a sudden struggle ensued. Cronk grabbed onto an officer’s rifle and later the same officer’s holstered handgun, resulting in a 40-second confrontation that ended with Cronk being tased twice.
Identification and Charges
Despite refusing to disclose his identity, Cronk was identified through a fingerprint scanner, revealing two NCIC warrants against him. He was associated with the ‘Proud Boys’ organization, unbeknownst to the officers at the scene. Cronk faced charges including disarming a police officer, assault, and obstructing service of a warrant.
Legal Proceedings
Pyne was booked for failure to comply with law enforcement commands, while Cronk’s next court appearance was scheduled for May 14. The incident highlighted the importance of having multiple officers present in handling such situations.
