Preliminary information from the South Dakota Highway Patrol suggests that Gembala and Nielson were traveling south on the highway when their vehicle veered off the road.
The vehicle reportedly crossed into the southbound lane before overcorrecting and rolling down an embankment multiple times. Tragically, neither Gembala nor Nielson was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
