Authorities have identified the four law enforcement officers tragically killed in a shootout on Monday in Charlotte, North Carolina. The incident took place in a suburban neighborhood, where a U.S. Marshals Task Force attempted to serve a warrant for firearm possession by a convicted felon. The wanted suspect, Terry Clark Hughes Jr, 39, engaged in a three-hour standoff with law enforcement before opening fire on the officers.

Victims of the Tragic Incident

One of the officers killed in the line of duty was Joshua Eyer, a dedicated member of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Eyer had served in the department’s North Tryon Division for six years and was a valued member of the 178th Recruit Class. Additionally, two officers, Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott, worked for the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction as task force officers assigned to the U.S. Marshals Carolinas Regional Task Force. Thomas M. Weeks Jr., a 13-year veteran of the U.S. Marshals Service, was also tragically killed in the incident. Weeks, a resident of Mooresville, North Carolina, leaves behind a wife and four children.

Details of the Standoff

After the tense three-hour standoff, the suburban Charlotte home where the suspect was located was breached by law enforcement. The suspect, Terry Clark Hughes Jr, was fatally shot during the exchange of gunfire. Charlotte Police revealed that Hughes was also wanted for two counts of felony fleeing to elude out of Lincoln County, North Carolina. Authorities suspect that two shooters may have been involved in the incident, as two persons of interest, a 17-year-old and a woman, were taken in for further investigation.

Recovery and Tribute

A total of eight law enforcement officers were shot during the incident. Three CMPD officers and a U.S. Marshals Task Force officer sustained injuries and are currently recovering. The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction expressed their deepest condolences for the fallen officers, stating that they “died as heroes and made the ultimate sacrifice in their service to our state.” The community mourns the loss of these brave officers and prays for healing for all those affected by this tragic event.
