Suspect Arrested for Allegedly Starting Three Fires in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A suspect, identified as Bernie Hidalgo, was arrested Sunday evening for allegedly starting three separate fires in Colorado Springs. According to a recently released arrest affidavit, the incidents occurred on West Pikes Peak Avenue and West Kiowa Street.

The arrest came after Officer J. Koterba from the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) responded to a fire at 2711 West Pikes Peak Avenue around 9:10 p.m. Sunday. Subsequently, more fire-related calls came in along the same street, leading investigators to believe that the fires were arson-related. The CSPD then collaborated with the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CFD) arson investigators to further investigate the incidents.

Following the fire activity, Officer Koterba spoke with two brothers living at 2709 West Pikes Peak Avenue, who were displaced due to a fire that started inside their garage. Surveillance footage provided by homeowner Erik Nau allegedly showed Hidalgo entering the garage and manipulating an object before smoke and flames erupted. The footage also captured Hidalgo leaving with a rifle case belonging to one of the brothers, Trevor Nau.

Officer B. Zipper obtained security footage from the alleyway between West Bijou Street and West Kiowa Street, which showed a man matching Hidalgo’s description allegedly setting two vehicles on fire at 2032 West Kiowa Street. The footage depicted the suspect carrying bags and wearing specific clothing items that aligned with the description provided by witnesses.

With multiple officers working on the case, Officer D. Leanard located Hidalgo at the intersection of 21st Street and Armstrong Avenue around 10:35 p.m. A shelter-in-place order was issued for the area as officers continued their search. Trevor Nau positively identified Hidalgo as the suspect who started the fire at their townhome during a show-up procedure conducted by Officer Koterba.

A grey rifle case belonging to Trevor Nau was found under a recreational vehicle in the area of 130 20th Street. In a Mirandized interview with CSPD’s Officer Chenoweth, Hidalgo allegedly confessed to starting the fires out of anger using lighters and a paper receipt found in one of the vehicles. He admitted to setting fire to other unlocked vehicles and hiding the rifle under a camper or RV.

Hidalgo is facing multiple charges, including fourth-degree arson, second-degree burglary, second-degree arson, and theft. He appeared in court on Tuesday, where his bond was set at $10,000. Hidalgo is scheduled to appear in court again on May 7 at 2:15 p.m. It was revealed during the court proceedings that Hidalgo has an outstanding warrant for his arrest in Kansas.
