Eighteen-year-old college student Alexa Kropf is in critical condition after being struck by a dirt bike in Albany, N.Y.
In the early hours of Saturday, April 27, police responded to a call at the 400 block of Hudson Avenue, where they discovered the victim “in the roadway with a serious head injury and a fractured leg,” as confirmed by the Albany Police Department in a Facebook statement.
According to CBS affiliate WRGB, NBC affiliate WYNT, and the Times Union, the female victim was identified as University at Albany student Alexa Kropf, who hails from Long Island.
The injured student received immediate medical attention at the scene before being transferred to Albany Medical Center Hospital. WYNT reported that Alexa has been placed in a medically-induced coma.

“Several witnesses reported seeing a male operating an illegal dirt bike at a high speed, weaving through groups of people on the road,” stated the Albany Police in a Facebook post.
“The suspect, while speeding, collided with the victim, causing her to be thrown into the air and land several feet away from the point of impact. The suspect fled the scene after hitting the victim,” the statement continued.
The University at Albany and Albany Police have not provided further comments at this time.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to support the victim and her family, raising over $56,000 to date.
Jim, Alexa’s father, expressed, “It’s pretty much hour to hour right now not even day to day. It’s very unnerving as a parent. It’s a phone call that no parent would want to receive… ever,” to WRGB.
“She suffered 2 broken bones in her lower right leg, compound fractures, she also has fractures of the pelvis both requiring surgery, she’s been through two brain surgeries so far to drain excess fluid and blood from the brain and she also has broken ribs and bruised lungs as well,” Jim added, according to the outlet.

Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan and Albany Police Chief Eric Hawkins issued a joint statement via the mayor’s Facebook page.
“We are deeply troubled by the unconscionable depravity shown by the driver of an illegally operated dirt bike toward an 18-year-old female who was struck and critically injured earlier this morning in Pine Hills. Our thoughts are with the victim and their family at this difficult time,” the message read.
“Based on the initial investigation, it is clear this individual weaponized an illegal vehicle against innocent civilians in our community. We strongly urge anyone with information about the suspect of this heinous act to come forward and share that information with law enforcement officials,” it added.
The mayor’s post stated, “It is illegal to operate off-road vehicles, including ATVs and dirt bikes, on any street or sidewalk, or in any public park in the City of Albany as per Local Law E of 2021. Local Law E also increased repossession fees, combined with illegal use fines, to £3,000 per violation.”
