Kaieteur News – Tragedy struck Bath Settlement, a peaceful village in the heart of Guyana, when a devastating fire tore through the property of 52-year-old businessman, Suresh Latchman. The blaze, which occurred on Friday at around 3:00 pm, engulfed Latchman’s home, boutique, mechanic shop, and three of his vehicles, leaving nothing but ashes and devastation in its wake.

The picturesque two-storey concrete building, where Latchman resided with his family and ran his businesses, was quickly reduced to rubble by the ferocious flames. The boutique, located on the lower floor, was a popular spot for locals, while Latchman’s son’s mechanic shop on the southern side of the building was a hub of activity in the village.

According to eyewitness accounts, Latchman was returning from Georgetown when he received a distressing phone call alerting him to the fire. His wife, who witnessed the initial sparks from an electrical wire on the eastern side of the building, managed to evacuate their grandchildren and daughter-in-law from the premises before the fire spread uncontrollably.

Authorities were swift to respond, with both the Guyana Fire Service and the Guyana Police Force rushing to the scene. The Onverwagt Fire Service, aided by a fire truck from GuySuCo, battled the blaze tirelessly until it was finally extinguished. However, the damage was already done, with Latchman’s property completely gutted, and his vehicles destroyed beyond repair.

The exact extent of the financial loss incurred by Latchman is yet to be determined, as investigations into the cause of the fire are still ongoing.

As the tight-knit community of Bath Settlement comes to terms with this devastating blow, the resilience and support shown by its residents shine through in the face of adversity.
