The Bluebird Motel in Innisfail, Alberta: Four Charged with Second-Degree Murder

Four individuals are facing charges of second-degree murder in connection with the tragic death of a man at the Bluebird Motel in Innisfail, Alberta, four years ago. The incident, which occurred in the early morning hours of Apr. 29, 2020, sent shockwaves through the community.

Upon receiving reports of a man in medical distress at the motel, RCMP officers rushed to the scene to find a 38-year-old Blackfalds resident, Ryan James Gudwer, lifeless. The circumstances surrounding Gudwer’s death were immediately deemed suspicious, prompting a thorough investigation by authorities.

After years of meticulous investigative work, which included forensic analysis, surveillance operations, obtaining judicial authorizations, and interviewing witnesses, RCMP announced on Friday that four suspects had been identified and charged in connection with the murder.

The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit Launches Project K-Nova

Given that all four suspects had moved significant distances since the tragic incident, the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit initiated Project K-Nova. The primary objective of this project was to locate and safely apprehend each of the individuals involved in Gudwer’s death.

On Apr. 16, police successfully arrested 44-year-old Cory William Hales in Red Deer, Alberta. Two days later, on Apr. 18, 27-year-old Thomas Jeffrey Houle was apprehended in Calgary. The following day, on Apr. 19, 2024, 25-year-old Amber Loretta Knickle was taken into custody in Maple Ridge, British Columbia. Lastly, on Apr. 20, 2024, police arrested 45-year-old Mathieu Bilodeau in Moncton, New Brunswick.

All four suspects are now awaiting their court appearances in Alberta, where they will face the charges of second-degree murder in connection with the death of Ryan James Gudwer at the Bluebird Motel in Innisfail.
