El Centro Man Arrested After Confrontation at Planet Fitness

In a surprising turn of events in the heart of El Centro, a routine missing person search led to a dramatic confrontation at a local Planet Fitness. The incident, which took place on Friday, April 26, involved 39-year-old Roque Silva and local law enforcement officers.

According to a press release from the El Centro Police Department, officers were searching for a missing person in the area of 1900 North Imperial Avenue when they made their way to Planet Fitness. It was there that Silva approached an officer and initiated an argument for reasons unknown. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, the officer explained the purpose of their presence and began to walk away.

However, things quickly took a turn for the worse when Silva turned his anger towards a gym-goer who was recording the encounter on his cell phone. Silva allegedly stole the phone from the individual and a physical altercation ensued as the gym-goer attempted to retrieve his property. The officer intervened to separate the two parties, but Silva became physically aggressive and engaged the officer.

As tensions escalated, the use of “less-than-lethal force options” was necessary to apprehend Silva, who was subsequently arrested on charges of resisting arrest, assault against a police officer, and robbery for the theft of the cell phone. He was taken into custody and booked at the Imperial County jail.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident in El Centro, a call reporting suspicious drug activity resulted in the arrest of five individuals. The initial call came in shortly after 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 25, prompting officers to be on the lookout for a specific vehicle. A few hours later, at 1:42 p.m., the vehicle was located and a traffic stop was conducted in the 1500 block of North Imperial Avenue.

During the traffic stop, one of the passengers, identified as Reginold Gilles, attempted to flee but was eventually apprehended by officers. Gilles was arrested on suspicion of evading arrest and booked at the Imperial County jail for an outstanding warrant. The remaining occupants of the vehicle were detained, and a search of the vehicle led to the arrest of the driver, Jacob Rodriguez, on drug-related charges.

The El Centro Police Department’s canine unit detected possible drugs in the vehicle, leading to Rodriguez’s arrest and further investigation into the matter. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat illegal drug activity in the community.

As both cases continue to unfold, the El Centro Police Department remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents in the area. Stay tuned for further updates on these developing stories.
