Tragic Semi-Crash Claims Two Lives on Interstate 65 in Austin, Indiana

In a devastating accident that shook the community of Austin, Indiana, two individuals lost their lives in a semi-truck crash on southbound Interstate 65. The incident took place late Monday evening near the 33 mile marker, just south of the Austin exit.

Details of the Crash

According to Indiana State Police reports, the crash involved three tractor-trailers, with two of them engulfed in flames when authorities arrived at the scene. The initial investigation suggests that a white Volvo tractor-trailer came to a halt due to traffic congestion caused by ongoing construction near the 31 mile marker. Subsequently, a second semi slowed down behind the first, but tragically, a third semi failed to decelerate, rear-ending the second truck and causing a chain reaction collision.

Victims identified

The fatal crash claimed the lives of the drivers in the second and third semi-trailers. The driver of the second semi was identified as Julianne Reid, 55, from Indianapolis, while the driver of the third semi was Damion Calvin Stewart, 38, hailing from Miami, Florida. Investigators believe that Stewart’s tractor-trailer collided with Reid’s from behind, resulting in both vehicles catching fire.

Survivor in Critical Condition

In addition to the two fatalities, a third individual from one of the trucks sustained severe burns and had to be airlifted to UofL Hospital. The survivor, whose identity has not been disclosed, remains in critical condition as medical professionals fight to save their life.
