Denver Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Shooting at Deputy During Pursuit
A 42-year-old man from Aurora, Colorado, was sentenced to 20 years in the Department of Corrections for shooting at a sheriff’s deputy during a pursuit. Jorge Armando Guzman pleaded guilty to charges of attempted first-degree murder, vehicular eluding, and possession of a weapon by a previous offender. His co-defendant, 40-year-old Melinda Maldonado, was also sentenced to 10 years for her involvement in the crime.
Details of the Crime
The incident began on September 5, 2021, in the early hours of the morning when a homeowner in the 9700 block of Millstone Court called the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office to report two individuals attempting to steal car parts. The suspects, later identified as Guzman and Maldonado, fled in a white SUV after being confronted by the homeowner.
Later that night, a deputy spotted the suspect vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The driver, Guzman, refused to pull over and led the deputy on a high-speed chase, reaching speeds over 100 mph. During the pursuit, Guzman fired five shots at the deputy, putting both the officer and the public in danger.
Arrest and Sentencing
The chase came to an end when the SUV crashed on the northbound Interstate 25 off-ramp for Arapahoe Road. Guzman attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended, while Maldonado was taken into custody at the scene. Both defendants were charged and later pleaded guilty to their respective crimes.

Despite Guzman’s attempt to evade capture and his reckless actions during the pursuit, he was ultimately sentenced to 20 years in the Department of Corrections.
