Police Activity Shuts Down Interstate 5 in Eugene, Oregon

All lanes on Interstate 5 southbound at mileposts 209 and 196 in Eugene were closed due to law enforcement activity on Tuesday, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation. The closure came as Oregon State Police responded to reports of a suspect speeding down the southbound lanes of the interstate at approximately 2:53 p.m.

Reports from KEZI indicated that the suspect, identified as former Yakima, Washington police officer Elias Huizar, 40, crashed near Milepost 197 after a high-speed chase. Shots were fired during the pursuit, with Huizar ultimately taking his own life at the end of the incident. Oregon State Police confirmed that a child who was in the vehicle is now safe in police custody.

Amber Alert Issued

An Amber Alert was issued on Monday night from Washington state after authorities reported that Huizar had allegedly killed his ex-wife and girlfriend and abducted his 1-year-old son, Roman Huizar. The Washington State Patrol warned that Huizar was armed, dangerous, and believed to be heading south to Oregon.

West Richland police reported seeing Huizar in Portland, Oregon, overnight, potentially driving a black sedan. The alert was issued on behalf of the West Richland Police Department, which reported Roman Huizar missing.

Tragic Events Unfold

Law enforcement officials revealed that Huizar had killed a woman outside William Wiley Elementary School in West Richland, Washington, on Monday before fleeing the scene. Subsequently, a search warrant conducted at Huizar’s residence led to the discovery of a second woman’s body.
