PHOENIX – Court documents have revealed new details in the case of a person who was reported missing by their family, shedding light on a troubling situation in the bustling city of Phoenix, Arizona.
The individual in question was reported missing on April 13, leading to a series of events that ultimately resulted in the arrest of a man who had been in their company prior to their disappearance.

Who’s the suspect?
The suspect has been identified as 21-year-old Shawn Paul Riherd. Described as homeless, Riherd had been residing in Arizona for approximately three to four months prior to his apprehension. Although court documents revealed a history of prior arrests for Riherd, the specifics were redacted.
It is important to note that authorities have not accused Riherd of kidnapping in relation to this case.
What happened?
According to court records, the missing person, identified as a teenager, informed their mother on April 12 that they would be spending the night at a friend’s residence. However, the individual failed to return home, prompting their mother to report them missing the following day.
On the same day, investigators uncovered a brief text exchange between the missing person and their mother, indicating the teenager’s discontent with their parents. Subsequently, the teen ceased communication with their family’s attempts to reach them.
While the teen’s mother was named in court documents, her identity has been withheld.
The teen’s phone was discovered by a kind Samaritan on a city bus in Tempe on April 14. The phone was later returned to the family, who then surrendered it to the Chandler Police.
Investigations revealed that several text messages on the teen’s phone from April 12 to April 14 had been deleted. However, photos recovered from the device depicted the teen in the company of two individuals on April 13 and 14, with one individual bearing distinctive tattoos on their face and neck. An Instagram account linked to this person displayed the name “Shawn Rodrigues,” but efforts to positively identify the man proved challenging.
The teen’s family enlisted the services of a private investigation firm to aid in locating them. On April 17, multiple tips emerged suggesting that the missing person and Riherd were situated at an apartment complex near Dunlap Avenue and the I-17.
Although law enforcement missed apprehending the pair by a narrow margin, they did recover a Social Security card bearing Riherd’s name, leading to the revelation of his full identity.
Riherd and the teen were eventually located by individuals seeking the missing teenager on April 21, outside an abandoned department store at the former MetroCenter Mall. The teen, displaying signs of illness and having vomited, was swiftly transported to a medical facility, where they tested positive for marijuana, methamphetamine, and fentanyl.
During questioning following the reading of his Miranda rights, Riherd disclosed that he had met the missing teen through a mutual acquaintance and felt compelled to look after them due to the perceived dangers of the streets. Riherd further mentioned that the teen had initially absconded from home out of frustration with their parents and to rendezvous with a juvenile male.
“The group remained at the Dunlap apartment until the juvenile male’s arrest. Subsequently, the [teen] and Shawn resided on the streets from Wednesday to Sunday, when they were eventually located,” excerpts from the court documents read.
According to investigators, Riherd acknowledged knowing that the missing teen was a runaway and admitted to using methamphetamine by befriending individuals who permitted him to partake in their drug consumption.
“Shawn described approaching individuals on the streets to partake in methamphetamine use, with [the teen] joining in as well,” investigators detailed.
Authorities confronted Riherd about his claim of safeguarding the teen while simultaneously exposing them to drug use, to which Riherd contended that the teen had autonomously made that choice.
