Tragic Incident In Houston Leads to Charges Against Couple

In a heartbreaking turn of events, charges have been filed against a man and woman in connection to the death of twin infants back in October 2023 in Houston, Texas. Angelina Belinda Calderon and Fernando Vega, both 21 years old, are facing two counts each of injury to a child-serious bodily injury.

Details of the Incident

ABC Houston affiliate KTRK first reported on the tragic incident on Oct. 4, 2023. Houston Police Department patrol officers responded to a home in the 2100 block of Linden Creek Lane where the unimaginable had occurred. Two infants, identified as Massail and Mirena Vega, were found unresponsive.

According to court documents, the children’s father, Vega, discovered the twins in their crib, not breathing. Despite his efforts to perform CPR as instructed by dispatch, the premature babies did not survive.

Investigation Reveals Shocking Details

Further investigation revealed that the infants had been found with discolored skin, multiple bruises, and contusions. One child had suffered multiple fractures. An autopsy determined that the cause of death was multiple injuries caused by a blunt object.

Arrests Made in Connection to the Tragedy

Calderon and Vega were identified as suspects and subsequently arrested on Friday, April 19. Calderon’s sister defended her, stating that she was at work when the children passed away. However, she later expressed confusion and distress, wondering what had happened to her daughters.

Family members disclosed that Vega had a history of abusing Calderon, with recent court documents showing he was arrested for unlawfully restraining her. While some relatives believe Calderon may not have physically harmed the children, they acknowledge that she should be held responsible for the neglect and injuries discovered by investigators.

Malnourishment and Old Injuries

Police revealed that both girls were malnourished and some of their injuries were days or even weeks old. This tragic incident has left the community in shock and mourning for the loss of these innocent lives.
