Police attempted to stop the Mazda on the Mitchell Highway near Dubbo around 9.15am, but the driver refused to comply, prompting a pursuit that was quickly called off due to safety concerns.

Tragically, the sedan crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a bus near the intersection of Mitchell Highway and Eulomogo Road. The driver of the Mazda was pronounced dead at the scene and has yet to be formally identified.

Despite the harrowing circumstances, the quick thinking of the bus driver, a 50-year-old woman, prevented further loss of life.
