On March 1, 2022, four officers were on a surveillance detail in Philadelphia when a bullet struck their unmarked vehicle. Two of the officers chased after 12-year-old Thomas Siderio and a 17-year-old boy who were in the vicinity. Mendoza, one of the officers, shot Siderio in the back after seeing the boy discard the gun he was carrying.
Legal Proceedings
Mendoza was initially charged with first- and third-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter, and possessing an instrument of crime. However, as part of a plea deal, he pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and possessing an instrument of crime. Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner emphasized that Mendoza shot Siderio despite knowing that the 12-year-old no longer had a gun and posed no threat to him.
Court Documents and Lawsuit
Court documents revealed that the officers passed by Siderio and the other boy in their unmarked car, circled back, and passed them again. The officers were not actively seeking the boys at the time. Siderio fired a shot at the vehicle during the second pass, prompting Mendoza to chase after him. Mendoza fired two shots at Siderio before the fatal shot that killed him. Following the tragic incident, Siderio’s family filed a federal lawsuit against Mendoza and the city of Philadelphia in January.
Justice and Accountability
Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner stressed the importance of holding Mendoza accountable for his actions. He highlighted the fact that Siderio, a 12-year-old weighing only 111 pounds, posed no threat to Mendoza at the time of the shooting. The guilty plea and impending sentencing are seen as steps towards achieving justice for the young victim and his family.
