Kaieteur News – Tragedy struck at Marudi Mountain, located in Region Nine, as a mining tunnel collapsed around midday on Thursday, covering three individuals. The incident resulted in one casualty and two survivors who narrowly escaped the collapsing tunnel.
Deceased, Peter Smith
The deceased individual was identified as 58-year-old Peter Smith, who had travelled from Brazil to Aishalton to assist his mother with agricultural activities. Facing financial constraints, Smith decided to venture to Marudi Mountain in search of gold to purchase essential supplies for his mother’s farm.
Accompanied by his younger siblings, Smith and his brothers were exploring the tunnels when tragedy struck. The tunnel collapsed, trapping the men inside. Despite Smith’s efforts to escape, he was unable to outrun the falling debris and was fatally crushed by large rocks.
Initially, there was confusion regarding the fate of Smith’s siblings, but it was later revealed that they managed to emerge from another exit of the tunnel, sustaining only minor injuries.
Following the incident, efforts were made to recover Smith’s body from the collapsed tunnel, marking a somber conclusion to the harrowing event.
Authorities have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the tunnel collapse, seeking to determine the factors that led to the tragic outcome.
