A 33-year-old man has been convicted of the first-degree murder of his mother-in-law in a house fire in Brampton in December 2020. Helder Vertentes-Arruda was also found guilty of one charge of attempted murder of his wife. First responders were called to a home on Martindale Crescent in the early morning hours of December 4, 2020, for reports of a fire. Peel police said six people lived in the house, with five residents already outside when firefighters arrived. A 34-year-old woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while a 71-year-old man and three children were unharmed. The body of 61-year-old Maria Correia was found in the home. Helder Vertentes-Arruda faces charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder.

First responders rushed to a home on Martindale Crescent in the early morning hours of December 4, 2020, after receiving reports of a fire. The house, where six people resided, was engulfed in flames when the firefighters arrived. Five of the residents managed to escape the blaze, but tragically, one person did not make it out alive.
The Victims
Among those affected by the fire was a 34-year-old woman who sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital. Additionally, a 71-year-old man and three children aged 11, 9, and 4 were unharmed physically. However, the body of a woman was discovered inside the home, later identified as 61-year-old Maria Correia.
Legal Action
Following the investigation, Peel police charged Helder Vertentes-Arruda with one count of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder. The tragic loss of life and the impact on the survivors have left the community in shock and mourning.
