Arrests Made Following Shooting Incident at Polling Booth in Imphal East

Three individuals have been apprehended by the Manipur Police in connection with a shooting incident that occurred at a polling booth in Imphal East district during the ongoing Lok Sabha elections in the state. The arrests took place on Friday evening, shortly after the suspects fled the scene in a vehicle, less than 5 km away from the polling station.

The individuals have been identified as Leichombam Jemson Singh (34), Nongthombam Ratan (47), and Khumukcham Angamba (32), as confirmed by the police in a statement released on Friday night. The arrests followed a post on Twitter by Manipur Police, detailing the situation and the identities of the suspects.

Recovery of Weapons and Other Items

Upon their apprehension, the police recovered a .32 pistol with eight live ammunition, three mobile phones, a car, and Rs 1.5 lakhs in cash from the arrested individuals. The recovery of these items suggests a premeditated plan behind the shooting incident at the Moirangkampu primary school polling station.

In addition to the shooting, the polling station itself was subject to vandalism, with electronic voting machines (EVMs) being set on fire. One individual, identified as 65-year-old Khoisnam Sayamaima, sustained injuries during the incident and was promptly hospitalized for treatment.

Further Incidents of Violence

Friday saw a second incident of gunfire in Thamanpokpi, where a group of miscreants fired several rounds near a polling station in Bishnupur district’s Moirang Assembly segment. Thankfully, no casualties were reported in this incident, although a video captured individuals fleeing the polling booth amid the sound of gunfire.

Furthermore, reports of vandalism emerged from at least one more polling station in Uripok, Imphal West. These incidents of violence marred what should have been a peaceful electoral process in the state.

Voter Turnout and Future Elections

Despite the disruptions, Manipur witnessed a voter turnout of 69.13 per cent in the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections on Friday. This phase covered approximately half of the constituencies in both inner and outer Manipur, setting the stage for the upcoming second phase of elections scheduled for April 26.

As the state prepares for further electoral proceedings, the authorities are taking measures to ensure the safety and security of voters and polling personnel. The incidents of violence serve as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining peace and order during the democratic process.
