A 19-year-old man from Mobile, Alabama has recently pleaded guilty to a single charge related to a fatal shooting that took place at the Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort in D’Iberville, Mississippi. Karmelo Cortez Morris Derks admitted to transporting a stolen vehicle across state lines, according to reports from Alabama TV station WALA.

The incident, which occurred in September 2022, resulted in the tragic death of Nicholaus Craig, a 36-year-old man who had been living in California. Derks and another individual, Darrius Dewayne Rowser, were charged with murder in connection to the shooting. The pair allegedly drove a stolen Nissan Altima from Mobile to Mississippi, where the fatal incident took place in the casino’s parking lot.

According to court documents, Rowser approached a Dodge Charger in the parking lot, fired a shot through the window at Craig, and then fled the scene with Derks. The following day, the stolen Altima was discovered in flames at an apartment complex in Prichard, Alabama.

Craig, who had been at the casino with his girlfriend, was on his way to Mobile to celebrate his birthday with family when the tragedy occurred. The couple had dined at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino before returning to the Scarlet Pearl, where Craig was fatally shot in his car.

The murder charge against Derks and Rowser is being handled separately in Mississippi state court. The Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort expressed condolences to the families affected by the incident, emphasizing the impact on all involved.

In a series of related events, another individual, John Fitzgerald McCarroll Jr., was allegedly involved in directing two other shootings at different locations. One incident took place at Bank Nightlife, resulting in the death of Derek Shavers, who was reportedly shot by Reginald Dennis Alan Fluker. The indicted defendants in these cases include Derks, McCarroll, Fluker, Rowser, Jimaurice Pierce, and Lyteria Hollis.

Derks and Rowser are also facing charges of attempted murder in connection with a separate incident at an Alabama Walmart, where Tomorion Williams was injured. Legal proceedings are ongoing in these cases, with further developments expected in the near future.
