Man Arrested in New Mexico After Allegedly Killing Paramedic and Police Officer

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (WMBF) – Shocking footage has emerged showing the moments a South Carolina man was arrested in New Mexico after allegedly committing a heinous crime, resulting in the deaths of both a paramedic and a police officer.

WMBF News obtained bodycam video on Tuesday of Jaremy Smith’s March 17 arrest in Bernalillo County, New Mexico. The sheriff’s office initially revealed the footage during a press conference held earlier in the day.

Smith stands accused of the deaths of Phonesia Machado-Fore, a Florence County paramedic residing in Marion County, and New Mexico State Police Officer Justin Hare. Additionally, Smith faces federal charges related to Hare’s tragic demise.

The gripping footage captured from multiple perspectives shows deputies swiftly responding to a neighbourhood in Bernalillo County on March 17. One of the deputies catches sight of a man, later identified as Smith, darting between houses and immediately gives chase.

As the second deputy arrives on the scene, a perimeter is swiftly established to apprehend Smith.

The video further reveals Smith dashing across backyards as the second deputy engages in a dramatic pursuit. Deputies also highlight a crucial moment in the footage where Smith allegedly discards a gun he had been brandishing during the chase.

Arrest and Confrontation

Subsequent scenes show Smith being instructed to halt his movements, prompting one of the deputies to discharge his firearm four times. Following a brief search, authorities manage to locate Smith once more, urging him to cease his actions before further gunshots ring out.

The video then depicts deputies apprehending Smith and firmly pinning him to the ground. One of the deputies proceeds to search Smith’s pockets and, amidst various items, retrieves a wallet containing a South Carolina driver’s license.

Upon helping Smith to a seated position, it becomes apparent that he has sustained a gunshot wound to his arm, with blood emanating from his mouth. Smith, expressing discomfort in his arm, receives on-site treatment from deputies as EMTs rush to the location. He is subsequently transported to a medical facility for treatment before being placed back into custody.

Legal Proceedings and Updates

As of the present moment, Smith remains detained in New Mexico and is slated to make an appearance in federal court later this week.
