The Long Beach Police Department is currently investigating a tragic incident that occurred over the weekend in the 1600 block of Gaviota Avenue. On Sunday at around 8:45 p.m., officers responded to reports of shots fired in the area.

Details of the Incident

Upon arrival, officers discovered 30-year-old Nelson Martinez Gonzalez with a gunshot wound to his upper body. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

According to investigators, Gonzalez was approached by a male suspect on foot who shot him before fleeing the scene. The suspect was later spotted inside a vehicle in the vicinity but evaded authorities by driving away, leading them on a pursuit.

Suspect Apprehended

The suspect, identified as 41-year-old Ahmed Mahmoud of Long Beach, was eventually located and arrested for an unrelated no-bail warrant. He has been booked on suspicion of murder and other charges, including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Mahmoud is currently being held on $3.1 million bail.

Police Response

LBPD officers established a perimeter in the area where Mahmoud was last seen and activated the SWAT Team in an effort to locate him. The successful apprehension of the suspect was a result of diligent investigative work by law enforcement.
