A 44-year-old man shot dead a police officer who was riding on a motorcycle and died by suicide in an auto-rickshaw at a flyover in northeast Delhi on Tuesday morning allegedly over a financial dispute between the two, police said. The man also opened fire at another scooterist, who sustained a bullet injury, and the driver of the auto-rickshaw, who escaped unhurt, police added. The incident happened at Meet Nagar flyover near Nand Nagri and police said they were informed about the incident at 11.42am. The deceased police officer has been identified as Dinesh Sharma, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), posted in the Delhi Police’s special branch.

The man, identified as Mukesh, shot dead a police officer who was riding a motorcycle and then turned the gun on himself in an auto-rickshaw. The shocking turn of events also saw another innocent bystander getting injured in the crossfire.

The tragic incident took place at the Meet Nagar flyover near Nand Nagri, and the police were alerted at 11.42 am. The deceased police officer, identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector Dinesh Sharma, was not in uniform when he was brutally attacked. Mukesh, the assailant, was known to the policeman and allegedly had a monetary dispute with him.

According to preliminary investigations, Mukesh and Dinesh Sharma were embroiled in a financial tussle, with the former claiming that the policeman owed him ₹5 lakh. Deputy Commissioner of Police Joy Tirkey stated that all possible angles are being probed to determine the motive behind the heinous act.

DCP Tirkey provided a chilling account of the events that unfolded at the flyover. Mukesh first opened fire at a passing biker, injuring him, before targeting a scooter rider from behind. The scooterist suffered a bullet wound to his waist before Mukesh commandeered an auto-rickshaw. Despite the driver’s resistance, Mukesh fired a shot at him, narrowly missing his target as the driver managed to evade the bullet.

In a tragic turn of events, Mukesh then turned the gun on himself while seated in the auto-rickshaw, ending his own life. The other two victims, including ASI Dinesh Sharma, were rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital. Sadly, Dinesh Sharma was declared brought dead, while the scooter rider, Amit Kumar, is currently undergoing treatment for his injuries.

The police recovered multiple live rounds and empty bullet shells from the crime scenes. A case of murder, attempted murder, and the use of firearms is being registered at the Jyoti Nagar police station.
