ANACORTES, Wash. — Anacortes police have announced plans to search for the body of a suspect believed to be responsible for the killing of his wife, a beloved 5th-grade teacher in Anacortes.
The search is set to commence near the Deception Pass Bridge, where a body was reportedly sighted in the water last week. Authorities are coordinating efforts to begin the search as early as Tuesday, although the specific agencies involved have not yet been confirmed.
Responding to inquiries about the delay in initiating the search, Brent Lindquist, public information officer for the Anacortes Police Department, explained that the process involves mobilizing volunteer search and rescue teams. Coordinating these efforts and ensuring adequate staffing are crucial factors in launching the search operation.
The tragic incident unfolded nearly a week ago when Anacortes police discovered the lifeless body of 41-year-old Caitlin Follstad inside her residence on J Avenue. Follstad, a dedicated 5th-grade teacher at Island View Elementary, was found deceased in close proximity to her workplace.

Subsequent investigations led authorities to a 2014 black Toyota Camry registered to the victim’s husband, Kevin Follstad, abandoned on the Deception Pass Bridge. Following this discovery, multiple reports surfaced regarding a body spotted in the water near the bridge, prompting a more comprehensive search effort.
Erik Olson, who towed the suspect’s vehicle at the request of dispatch, shared a document describing key details of the vehicle provided by law enforcement. Additionally, the suspect’s father contacted authorities, expressing concerns about his son’s mental state and indicating suicidal tendencies.
According to Lindquist, previous reports had been made regarding Kevin Follstad’s mental health, but these instances did not escalate to a level necessitating immediate intervention.
