WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (OnFocus) – The City of Wisconsin Rapids Police Department was alerted to a terrifying incident during the week of April 8, 2024. An individual broke into a home in the peaceful neighbourhood of Wisconsin Rapids, holding two innocent individuals at gunpoint for several harrowing hours. The alarming suspect, identified as Austin J. Knuesel, aged 36, recklessly discharged a round into the ceiling during the ordeal. Reports indicated that Knuesel brandished a sawed-off shotgun and issued chilling threats to return and harm the occupants of the house if his demands were not met.

On April 13, 2024, the Wood County Sheriff’s Department swiftly pinpointed Knuesel’s whereabouts and proceeded to execute a search warrant at his residence on CTH D in the tranquil Town of Sigel, Wood County, Wisconsin. Knuesel was taken into custody without resistance, and authorities uncovered a sawed-off shotgun within his abode, alongside a substantial quantity of suspected marijuana.
Continuing their diligent efforts, on April 15, 2024, the Wood County Sheriff’s Department conducted a search warrant in connection to the shooting incident that transpired in the City of Wisconsin Rapids. Crucial evidence pertaining to the shooting was successfully recovered, and following a brief standoff, four individuals were apprehended. The event unfolded on or around 8th Ave South in the City of Wisconsin Rapids, leading to a significant law enforcement presence, including the deployment of the Wood County Sheriff’s Department’s armoured vehicle. Notably, all four individuals were taken into custody on charges unrelated to the shooting.
At the time of his arrest on April 13, 2024, Knuesel was out on bond for Child Sexual Assault, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and drug-related offences. Currently, Knuesel is detained at the Wood County Jail on a substantial $100,000 cash bond.
The Wisconsin Rapids Police Department provided crucial support to the Wood County Sheriff’s Department throughout the execution of both search warrants.
