A man has been arrested in Larimer County for allegedly shooting and killing cattle that belonged to his neighbors. Michael Hester faces charges of aggravated animal cruelty, second-degree criminal trespass, theft of certain animals, and shooting across a public highway. Larimer County Sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of Hester shooting livestock on Buckhorn Road. Seven cattle were found dead, and an eighth had to be euthanized due to critical injuries. The total value of the dead cattle exceeded $30,000. Hester was arrested and issued a $5,000 personal recognizance bond. The Colorado Open Range Law allows livestock to graze without containment, but property owners must fence off areas they wish to protect. The Arrest of Michael Hester in Larimer County
A man has been taken into custody in Larimer County after allegedly shooting and killing cattle that belonged to his neighbours. The accused, Michael Hester, now faces multiple charges, including aggravated animal cruelty, second-degree criminal trespass, theft of certain animals, and shooting across a public highway.
The incident took place on Buckhorn Road, where Larimer County Sheriff’s deputies responded to reports on April 1. Witnesses informed the authorities that Hester had driven a UTV around his property while targeting the livestock of nearby ranchers.
Upon investigation, authorities discovered seven dead cattle in various locations surrounding the area. Additionally, they found an eighth cow that had sustained critical injuries and had to be euthanized.

The collective value of the deceased cattle is estimated to exceed $30,000.
Following the harrowing incident, Hester was apprehended and subsequently granted a $5,000 personal recognizance bond by the Larimer County Court.

Undersheriff Joe Shellhammer, who leads the LCSO Operations Division, expressed his dismay over the situation, stating, “This crime displays a disturbing disregard for life and livelihood. We understand the significance of these animals to our ranching community, and we will not tolerate actions that jeopardize their well-being.”
The Colorado statute commonly referred to as the “Open Range Law” permits livestock owners to graze their animals without enclosure. However, individuals who prefer to restrict livestock access to their property are mandated to fence off those specific areas.
