Man Arrested for Murder May Have Charge Dismissed
In Huntsville, Alabama, a recent arrest in connection to a murder that occurred in November may now be facing a surprising turn of events. On November 12, 2023, the Huntsville Police Department responded to a shooting victim on Cobb Rd. Unfortunately, they found 33-year-old Francisco Ramirez with gunshot wounds, and he later succumbed to those injuries.
The Incident
After a thorough investigation, a murder warrant was issued for Walter Escorcia-Gomez. Fast forward to April 4, when officers responded to Huntsville Hospital for an assault victim identified as Escorcia-Gomez. To their shock, he was recognized as the murder suspect from the November shooting death of Ramirez.
The Arrest
Once Escorcia-Gomez was discharged from the hospital, he was promptly arrested on the murder warrant and held without bond. However, on April 8, a surprising development occurred when the Madison County District Attorney’s Office filed a motion to dismiss the charge against Escorcia-Gomez.

Legal Defence
According to Tim Douthit, a Chief Trial Attorney with the Madison County District Attorney’s Office, this case revolves around self-defense. Escorcia-Gomez claimed that he fired in self-defense and was in fear for his life. He alleged that Ramirez had previously fired a gun at him and threatened to kill him if they ever crossed paths again.
Surveillance footage and eyewitness accounts supported Escorcia-Gomez’s claims, revealing that Ramirez had drawn what appeared to be a gun on Escorcia-Gomez first. Only then did Escorcia-Gomez fire at Ramirez, resulting in his death. Douthit emphasised that while Escorcia-Gomez was responsible for Ramirez’s demise, it falls under a legal defence in Alabama.
Conclusion
In light of these circumstances, law enforcement moved to drop the charges, with the District Attorney’s Office concurring and filing the motion to dismiss. As of now, the motion is pending approval or denial. This marks a significant twist in what initially seemed like an open-and-shut case of murder.
