CHENNAI: In a swift operation based on a tip-off, the state flying squad on Saturday night confiscated nearly Rs 4 crore in cash from three individuals at the Nellai Express train in Tambaram railway station. The investigation revealed that one of the suspects is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Acting on information that three men had boarded the train in Egmore carrying multiple bags, including a trolley, the flying squad, along with the police, rushed to Tambaram railway station around 9 pm. Upon searching the second-class AC coach (A1), the suspects were identified as S Sathish (33) of Agaram, his brother S Navin (31), and S Perumal (26) of Thoothukudi. The bags in their possession were found to be loaded with cash, all in 500 rupee notes.

Subsequently, all three individuals were detained at the police station, and the income tax department was promptly notified. Sources within the income tax department indicated that the suspects would be questioned on either Sunday or Monday, as the department’s teams were engaged in other districts. Following the suspects’ admission, police teams conducted searches in Kilpauk, Triplicane, and Saligramam, focusing on locations associated with Tirunelveli BJP candidate Nainar Nagendran. Allegedly, the cash had been stored in these places before being transported to Egmore railway station.

The ongoing investigation aims to determine the origin of the cash and whether it was intended for distribution in the Tirunelveli Lok Sabha constituency.
