Kolhapur: Four people, including a three-year-old girl and a teenager, tragically lost their lives in a devastating road accident in Sangli early on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred when a truck collided with their tractor-trolley, resulting in the immediate demise of the victims.

The deceased individuals were part of a larger group of sugar cane cutters and their family members from Solapur’s Mangalwedha region. They were on their way back home after completing three-and-a-half months of hard work in the sugar cane fields. The victims have been identified as 30-year-old Shalan Khandekar, 35-year-old Jagamma Hegde, 17-year-old Dada Evale, and 3-year-old Nilabai Evale.

The tragic accident took place at Agalgaon Phata, located along the Nagpur-Ratnagiri National Highway in Sangli’s Kavathe Mahankal tehsil between 2:30 am and 3 am on Tuesday. The group’s tractor had broken down, prompting them to park it along the roadside for repairs. It was at this moment that a truck, registered in Andhra Pradesh and heading towards Solapur, collided with the stationary tractor-trolley.

Inspector Jotiram Patil of the Kavathe Mahankal police station confirmed the details of the accident, stating that four individuals lost their lives on the spot, while 10 others sustained injuries. The injured individuals were promptly transported to the Miraj Civil Hospital for medical treatment. Additionally, the truck driver responsible for the collision has been arrested by the authorities.

It is common for individuals from drought-prone regions like Mangalwedha to migrate to Sangli and Kolhapur for seasonal work in the sugar cane fields. The group from Mangalwedha had been employed at a sugar mill in Kolhapur for the ongoing crushing season, which began in mid-November and is nearing its end.

This tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers that commuters face on the roads, especially during late-night or early-morning hours. The authorities have urged all road users to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent such heart-wrenching accidents in the future.

In a related incident, two youths named Abhiram and Albin lost their lives in a separate road accident in Kothamangalam. The duo collided with a parked mini-truck near a temple arch, sustaining fatal injuries. The recent string of road accidents underscores the importance of road safety and responsible driving practices to prevent further loss of life on the streets.
