CHARLOTTE, Mich.—A woman who was extradited from Italy for the 2002 fatal bludgeoning of her husband in Michigan has been convicted of second-degree murder after a jury in Eaton County deliberated for only two hours.

The tragic incident took place in Charlotte, a small town located about 105 miles northwest of Detroit. It was here that Roberto Caraballo, 37, was suffocated and beaten in the basement of his home. The shocking turn of events unfolded in 2002, but it wasn’t until 2015 that burned remains found in a metal locker near a blueberry field in western Michigan’s Ottawa County were identified as Caraballo.

Beverly McCallum, now 63, was arrested in Italy in 2020 and held there for over two years before being extradited back to Michigan to face trial. Prosecutors argued that McCallum wanted to get rid of Caraballo after he was released from federal prison, as his presence was cramping her lifestyle.

Defense attorney Timothy Havis, on the other hand, maintained that McCallum had no role in the killing and was merely lured into taking a ride to dispose of the remains. However, a key witness at the trial, Christopher McMillan, who had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, implicated McCallum in the attack along with her daughter, Dineane Ducharme.

Ducharme, now 43, is currently serving a life sentence after being convicted of first-degree murder in 2021, while McMillan, 45, is serving a minimum of 15 years in prison for his involvement.

The swift verdict by the jury brings some closure to the long-standing case that has spanned over a decade. The community of Charlotte, known for its small-town charm and close-knit residents, was shocked by the gruesome details that emerged during the trial.
