Early Tuesday morning, a tragic incident occurred on Southeast Commercial Street in Salem, Oregon, when an intoxicated man driving in the wrong lane collided head-on with another vehicle, resulting in fatal injuries to the other driver.

Details of the Accident

The driver of an SUV, identified as Thomas E. Cesna, 38, was traveling south on Southeast Commercial Street in the northbound lane at approximately 6:30 a.m. when his vehicle crashed into a pickup truck heading north on the same street. The collision took place in the 3800 block of the street, causing severe damage to both vehicles.

Victim Identified

The driver of the pickup truck, 52-year-old Jose R. Hernandez-Orozco of Salem, was critically injured in the crash and was rushed to Salem Hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, despite efforts to save him, Hernandez-Orozco succumbed to his injuries and passed away at the hospital.

Suspect in Custody

Thomas E. Cesna, the driver of the SUV, sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the accident and was also transported to the hospital for medical care. However, Cesna, who was found to be intoxicated at the time of the collision, is currently in police custody. Authorities have indicated that charges of second-degree manslaughter, reckless driving, reckless endangering, and driving under the influence of an intoxicant are pending against him.
