A man from Barren County has been arrested following a standoff at a storage facility in Glasgow. The Glasgow Police Department responded to a report of a man with a gun at Storage Sense on Happy Valley Road. Upon arrival, officers found a male inside the office holding a firearm, later identified as 44-year-old Christopher L. Safford. Despite verbal commands to drop the weapon and exit the building, Safford refused to comply. The Barren County Tactical Team eventually apprehended him, discovering that the firearm was stolen. Safford, a convicted felon, faces charges including possession of a handgun, receiving stolen property, and first-degree wanton endangerment. He is currently held at the Barren County Detention Center. Assistance was provided by the Barren County Sheriff’s Office.
Man Arrested After Standoff at Glasgow Storage Facility
A Barren County man has been arrested following a tense standoff at a storage facility in Glasgow. The incident took place at Storage Sense, located at 908 Happy Valley Road, on Tuesday morning.
According to Major Terry Flatt of the Glasgow Police Department, officers responded to a report of a man with a gun at the facility at 9:15 am. Upon arrival, they encountered a female who had managed to escape the building, with a male suspect still inside, armed with a firearm.
Despite verbal commands from law enforcement to drop the weapon and surrender, the man, later identified as 44-year-old Christopher L. Safford from Glasgow, refused to comply. Negotiations were attempted, but ultimately, the Barren County Tactical Team had to intervene to apprehend the suspect.
During the operation, it was discovered that the firearm in Safford’s possession had been reported as stolen. As a result, Safford faces charges including possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, receiving stolen property (firearm), and first-degree wanton endangerment. He has been remanded to the Barren County Detention Center.
Assistance was provided by the Barren County Sheriff’s Office in resolving the situation at the storage facility. Further details emerged regarding Safford’s criminal history, with multiple felony convictions dating back to the late ’90s.
According to records from the Kentucky Department of Corrections, Safford has been convicted on several charges, including first-degree robbery, second- and third-degree burglary, and theft by unlawful taking, all in Christian County.
