Austin Man Charged with Murder After Fatal Hit-and-Run at East Seventh and Red River Streets
23-year-old Tyrone Thompson is facing murder charges after allegedly hitting two pedestrians at the intersection of East Seventh and Red River streets in downtown Austin on March 12. The tragic incident occurred during South by Southwest, a popular annual event in the city.
Court documents reveal that Thompson was later arrested following a separate incident that involved drugs and violent crimes. On Friday, March 29, he was officially charged with murder in connection to the hit-and-run.

Police Encounter and Hit-and-Run
According to reports, Austin police officers were patrolling downtown Austin when they noticed a car in a parking lot with individuals suspected of illegal activities. The car, which had a damaged headlight, left the parking lot as officers attempted to approach it.
Thompson, the driver of the car, reportedly evaded officers and ran a red light at the intersection of East Seventh and Red River streets, where the fatal hit-and-run took place. 26-year-old Cody Shelton, one of the pedestrians struck by the vehicle, tragically lost his life at the scene.
Subsequent Incident and Arrest
About an hour later, Thompson was involved in a separate accident on Wolfe Lane in Del Valle, where he exhibited erratic behavior. Deputies from the Travis County Sheriff’s Office and Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash scene.
Thompson, allegedly under the influence of alcohol and possibly methamphetamine or crack cocaine, resisted arrest and engaged in physical altercations with law enforcement officers. He was eventually subdued and taken into custody, where deputies found a bottle of tequila and a loaded gun in his vehicle.
