The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office has identified the deceased woman found in the Russian River near Ukiah last month as Caitlin Bunger, a 37-year-old woman who had been reported missing twice since October. Bunger, who had moved to California several months ago, was living in Ukiah without a permanent address. The MCSO is still investigating the cause and manner of her death and has requested anyone with information to contact them. Bunger was the second deceased person found in the river last month, following Joshua Scott Freeman, a lifelong Mendocino County resident. Freeman’s cause of death is still pending final autopsy results.

**Tragic discovery of missing woman in Russian River near Ukiah**

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office has recently confirmed the identity of a deceased woman found in the Russian River near Ukiah last month. The body was discovered by a man swimming in the river south of Ukiah on March 24, and has been identified as Caitlin Bunger, a 37-year-old woman who had moved to California only five to six months prior.

**Identification of the deceased woman**

After conducting an autopsy on March 27, MCSO personnel were able to match the physical characteristics of the decedent to recent missing person reports. It was revealed that Bunger had been reported missing twice since October, with the last report being in March of 2024. She was known to be living in Ukiah without a permanent address and frequented the Perkins Street Bridge area.

**Ongoing investigation**

The MCSO is currently investigating the cause and manner of Bunger’s death and is urging anyone with information to come forward. Bunger’s tragic death follows the discovery of another deceased person in the Russian River near Ukiah last month.

**Previous discovery of deceased man**

In a separate incident, a man’s body was pulled from the river near the end of Norgard Lane on March 1. The man was identified as Joshua Scott Freeman, a life-long Mendocino County resident. The MCSO found no obvious signs of foul play in his case, but the cause and manner of his death are still pending final autopsy results.

**Personal connection to the incidents**

The man who reported finding Bunger’s body, Zeke Baker of Santa Rosa, revealed that Freeman was his cousin-in-law. Baker had been swimming in the river between Talmage and Hopland as a tribute to his family member when he made the tragic discovery. Despite the horrifying experience, Baker expressed gratitude that Bunger’s body had been recovered.
