Like many London EM consultants, I was shocked and saddened by the news of Bill’s passing. The funeral service was a somber affair, filled with grief and disbelief at the loss of such a talented and dedicated colleague.
But amidst the tears and sorrow, there was also a palpable sense of anger in the room. Anger at the working conditions that had potentially played a role in Bill’s untimely death. Anger at a system that seemed to prioritize efficiency and cost-cutting over the well-being of its employees.

Bill was a well-respected member of our team, known for his quick thinking and calm under pressure. He had a passion for emergency medicine that was infectious, and his dedication to his patients was unwavering. It is difficult to imagine our department without him.
As we gathered to pay our final respects, many of us couldn’t help but wonder if things could have been different. If the long hours, constant stress, and lack of support had not taken their toll on Bill’s health. If there had been more resources available, more staff to share the burden, perhaps he would still be with us today.
The reality is that emergency medicine is a demanding field, with high stakes and intense pressure. But that does not mean that our well-being should be sacrificed in the process. It is a tragedy that someone as talented and dedicated as Bill felt that he had no other choice but to push himself to the limit, day in and day out.
As we mourn the loss of our colleague and friend, we must also use this moment to reflect on the state of our profession. We must demand better working conditions, more support for those on the front lines, and a greater emphasis on mental health and well-being.

Bill’s death should not be in vain. It should serve as a wake-up call to all of us in the emergency medicine community. We owe it to ourselves, to Bill, and to all those who come after us to create a system that values the health and happiness of its employees above all else.
Rest in peace, Bill. You will be deeply missed, but your memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved you.
