According to the authorities, the Ramseys, a married couple who were the homeowners at the address, were victims of a violent homicide. James Ramsey was discovered in the backyard by a concerned neighbour, who later turned out to be his sister. Meanwhile, Betty Ramsey was found lifeless inside the residence.

The police identified the suspect as 53-year-old Julian P. Goodrum, a close friend of the Ramseys who had been living on-and-off with them for about 16 years.
