Today, a foreign national residing in Salt Lake City, Utah, is set to appear before a U.S. Magistrate Judge after being indicted by a federal grand jury on March 27, 2024. Gustavo Flores-Hernandez, 31, of Salt Lake City, faces charges for possession of fentanyl with the intent to distribute.

Investigation and Arrest

The investigation into Flores-Hernandez began when authorities suspected him of distributing a controlled substance in Salt Lake County, Utah. On March 21, 2024, detectives from the Utah County Major Crimes Task Force (UCMC) executed a search warrant at an apartment in Salt Lake City. During the search, they discovered approximately 12,404 grams (124,044 pills) of blue pills that tested positive for fentanyl. Flores-Hernandez was apprehended at the scene, where he was found in possession of around $9,000 in cash and 50 grams (500 pills) of fentanyl-laced pills.

Charges and Court Appearance

Flores-Hernandez is facing charges of possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute, as well as reentry of a previously removed alien. His initial court appearance on the indictment is scheduled for April 1, 2024, at 2:30 p.m. in courtroom 8.4 at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City.

Investigative Agencies and Prosecution

The case is being investigated collaboratively by a task force officer with the Utah County Major Crimes Task Force, the American Fork Police Department, and the FBI Salt Lake City Field Office. Special Assistant United States Attorney Peter Reichman of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah is prosecuting the case.
