A 53-year-old man in Pathanamthitta, Kerala, became the latest victim of a wild elephant attack when he tried to chase away the animal that had strayed into the surroundings of his house on the forest fringes. The incident occurred in Thulappally in the early hours of Monday, marking the fifth death caused by wild elephants in the state over the past three months.

Details of the Tragic Incident

The victim, Biju, a local auto driver, came out of his house along with his wife, Daisy, upon hearing the trumpets of the elephant outside. The animal grabbed him using its trunk and threw him to the ground twice, as recounted by Daisy, who witnessed the harrowing event.

According to Daisy, the same elephant had previously strayed into the area and caused havoc. It was seen trying to uproot a coconut tree in the surroundings before moving towards Biju quickly after trumpeting multiple times.

Community Outcry and Government Response

Following the tragic incident, local residents staged a sit-in protest in the area, demanding a permanent solution to address the issue of human-animal conflict. Health Minister Veena George visited Biju’s house later in the day to console his family members and assure them that the government would provide adequate compensation.

Notably, Kerala has witnessed a series of deaths due to wild elephant attacks in recent months, highlighting the urgent need to address the escalating human-wildlife conflict in the state.
