The government in New Delhi has established a task force to investigate the potential use of biochar in steel production as a means to decrease carbon emissions in the industry. New Delhi Government Sets Up Task Force to Explore Biochar Use in Steel Production
In a significant development, the Union Steel Minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia, approved the formation of 13 task forces in March 2023 to focus on various aspects of green steel production and sustainable manufacturing processes. These task forces aim to identify action points for each area, including raw materials, technology, and policy frameworks.
Focus on Carbon Reduction in the Domestic Steel Industry
With India’s greenhouse gas emissions heavily influenced by the steel sector, accounting for 12% of the total emissions, the government has stepped up its efforts to address the issue. The 14th task force specifically focuses on carbon reduction practices in the domestic steel industry through the utilization of biochar, a black carbon produced from biomass sources like agricultural waste products.
The steel ministry highlighted the importance of biochar in reducing carbon emissions, stating that the 14th Task Force on ‘Use of Biochar and Other Relevant Products in Steel Making’ was formed on December 5, 2023. Biochar manufacturing, using stainless steel chambers, offers a sustainable and non-corrosive material for various applications, including agriculture and steel production.

Expert Insights on Biochar Usage
Aruna Sharma, former steel secretary, emphasised the versatility of biochar, stating that it can be a vital tool in reducing carbon emissions in the steel industry. She highlighted the potential for biochar to be used in electric arc furnaces, further enhancing its environmental benefits.
“Biochar manufacturing, using stainless steel chambers, is the future, offering non-corrosive and non-toxic sturdy material. Besides agriculture use, it can be input in an electric arc furnace,” Sharma explained.
As the government continues to focus on sustainable practices in the steel industry, the exploration of biochar usage marks a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting green steel production.
