Constable David Chesire, attached to Kamukunji police station, was swept away by floods on March 24 as he tried to rescue a trapped family. He stepped into an open manhole and drowned, leaving his AK47 rifle with 30 bullets missing.

Frustration Grows Among Family and Friends

The family and friends of Chesire are calling upon the government to help them recover his body. They expressed frustration with the lack of resources allocated to the search efforts. Nairobi Woman representative Esther Passaris visited the site and called on the military to be deployed to assist in the search for the missing officer.

Chesire’s father, Joseph Chesire, has been camping at the site for almost a week, waiting for any sign of his son. Chesire is among more than ten people who lost their lives to the floods. Evacuations were carried out in Kayole, with residents seeking refuge at Kayole-Soweto Social Hall.

Government Response

Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja visited the affected areas and directed the Nairobi Water Sewerage Company to provide clean water to residents. He emphasized the importance of heeding calls to move from flood-prone areas and assured that the county government was working with national agencies to offer emergency support.
