Accident – Death – Obituary News : : 1. “Fake news debunked”
2. “Misinformation fact-checked”
The collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge after being struck by a container ship led to false claims circulating on social media. A video showing an explosion on the bridge was actually from 2022 and related to the Kerch Bridge in Crimea, not the Key Bridge incident. The captain of the ship was Indian, not Ukrainian, and the claim that Angela Chao, Mitch McConnell’s sister-in-law, was the CEO of the company that owns the ship is false. These stories were debunked by the Associated Press, highlighting the importance of fact-checking before sharing information online. Danish shipping giant Maersk announced that they had chartered a vessel, dismissing false claims circulating on social media about the death of Angela Chao, head of the Foremost Group shipping business. The misinformation suggested her involvement in a recent cargo ship accident at the Key Bridge. The vessel, owned by Grace Ocean Private Ltd. and managed by Synergy Marine Group in Singapore, was chartered by Maersk. Chao, who tragically died in a Texas pond after driving intoxicated, was the president of The Foremost Foundation and sister to Elaine Chao, former transportation secretary. An investigation confirmed her death as an accidental incident with high alcohol levels.

There is no connection between Chao and the incident involving Dali and the Key Bridge. Chao, a shipping executive and businesswoman, tragically died in a February accident. She was not involved in the ownership or management of the container ship that collided with the bridge in Baltimore.
False claims linking Chao to the incident began circulating on social media this week. One tweet falsely stated, “The CEO of the company that owns the ship that hit the bridge in Baltimore is dead. What a coincidence.” Another Facebook post shared an image of Chao with a caption accusing her of being responsible for the crash.

Chao was indeed a prominent figure in the shipping industry, serving as the chair and CEO of Foremost Group, a global shipping enterprise founded by her father. However, there is no connection between Foremost Group and the ownership or management of Dali, the container ship involved in the Key Bridge incident.
Grace Ocean Private Ltd., the owner of Dali, and Synergy Marine Group, the ship’s manager, are both based in Singapore. The Indian captain and crew of Dali were not affiliated with Foremost Group or Angela Chao in any way.
It is important to verify information before sharing it on social media to prevent the spread of false claims and misinformation. The tragic incident involving the Key Bridge and the container ship Dali is already a significant event without the need for additional false narratives.
In conclusion, social media users should be cautious of misinformation and false claims, especially in the wake of major incidents like the collapse of the Key Bridge in Baltimore. Fact-checking and verifying information before sharing it can help prevent the spread of misleading content and ensure that accurate information is disseminated to the public.
