In the last two days, the Rhode Island State Police have apprehended ten individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

One of the incidents occurred in the early hours of Saturday at 12:40 AM, when the State Police received reports of a collision involving two vehicles on South County Trail in Exeter.

Upon investigation, it was revealed that a Chevy Equinox, heading north on South County Trail, was attempting to make a left turn onto Pine View Lane when it was hit by a Toyota Camry driven by Ryan Iovino, aged 33, from Charlestown, Rhode Island.

Eye witnesses at the scene reported that Iovino, traveling southbound, was driving recklessly and at a high speed prior to the accident.

State Police officers noted that Iovino displayed clear signs of intoxication and subsequently charged him with Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicating Liquor and/or Drugs, First Offense, as well as Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicating Liquor and/or Drugs Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury – First Offense.

As a result of the crash, the front seat passenger of the Equinox sustained serious injuries and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital by Exeter Fire and Rescue. Both the driver of the Equinox and Iovino escaped without injuries.

The investigation into the collision is ongoing, and State Police have reported eight other DUI arrests made overnight.

Thursday Night Wrong Way DUI

An arrest was made in connection to the incident that led to the closure of I-95 on Thursday night, as announced by the State Police on Friday.

At around 10:00 PM, State Police officers responded to emergency calls reporting a wrong-way driver traveling south in the northbound lanes of Route 95 in Pawtucket.

The vehicle in question was described as a white SUV. Troopers arrived at the scene to find a three-car collision at the Barbara Leonard Way overpass in Providence, with one of the vehicles being the white SUV.

Upon further investigation, it was determined that the white SUV was traveling south in the high-speed lane of Route 95 North when it collided head-on with a vehicle just south of Branch Avenue, before hitting a second vehicle.

Providence Fire and Rescue transported the driver of the white SUV, identified as Matthew E. Fisher, aged 39, from 22 Frenier Ave, Attleboro, Massachusetts, as well as the driver and passenger of the vehicle that was struck head-on, to Rhode Island Hospital.

Fisher has been charged with Driving Under the Influence of Liquor – Serious Injury (Blood Results Pending), Reckless Driving, and Driving to Endanger – Resulting in Serious Injury. He is being held at Rhode Island Hospital and is scheduled to appear in 6th District Court on 11th April 2024.
